God’s Word in Our Pursuit of Holiness

As a follow up to yesterday’s post about “Discipling ourselves for godliness” I want to emphasize an important point regarding a pursuit for holiness.

ToDoList2bA pursuit of holiness is impossible without a diligent study of God’s Word. It’s actually the beginning point or starting line.

II Timothy 3:16 tells us

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”.

Training in righteousness is discipline in doing righteousness.

It’s through a diligent and consistent habit of studying the Bible that we learn about God and what pleases Him and what does not. There is simply no other way. And its at this point the Devil battles us so often. If he can convince us that we know enough or discourage us to the point we quit or not be consistent, that is when we begin the process of “being conformed to the world” instead of “being transformed by the renewing of our minds”- Rom. 12:2

How about you today? What is the Lord teaching you recently through your habitual study of God? Are you memorizing Scripture simply to know it and to be able to meditate on it and to strive to be holy? God’s Word is the starting line in our journey of life while we live on Earth and is there for us to know God intimately.

Growing up I remember my pastor used to say, “This book will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from this book”. You know what? He was right!

Psalm 119:11, “Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against you.”
